This 48-hour course is designed to prepare the participant for working in a jail or detention center. It focuses on developing knowledge and skills to better equip an individual for maintaining the safety and security of a facility, as they ensure the incarcerated individuals’ needs are met in a humane and legal manner. It is a MUST for individuals just beginning a career working in a jail and a friendly refresher for those who have been working in a jail for some time.

There are many different state statutes, local court rules and Missouri Supreme Court Rules that directly or indirectly affect jail staff, as well as jail operations. This lesson covers a few common statutes and rules staff are likely to be affected by. It also covers caselaw relating to the duty to attend to the serious medical needs of inmates and the legal duty to intervene to prevent inmates from self-harm and harm at the hands of another, including jail staff.
This course is designed to provide the student the necessary skills and knowledge to perform the formal functions of supervision to include planning, reporting, improving, directing, and evaluating (PRIDE).

Teaching techniques or procedures that fall below the standard of a specific industry or negligently drafting an employee training manual or employee training guide that fails to properly train employees for the tasks in which they will be working can lead to unwanted liability. Throughout history managing inmate behavior has been a goal of administrators and it is now more important than ever. A key aspect of any inmate behavior management plan is inmate classification. This presentation begins by defining classification and discussing standards for evaluating classification assessment tools. It covers core distinguishing features of an objective classification system, aspects of system validity and reliability, along with the need for appropriate override within the system. It concludes with a tabletop where participants work through an actual classification exercise.
