SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Keeping Calm With First Amendment Audits
DESCRIPTION:POST #25045 \nIn 1991\, George Holliday happened to have a video camera on hand to record an unarmed suspect\, Rodney King\, being violently beaten by the Los Angeles Police Department. The video captured by Holliday has been broadcast globally and seen millions of times. Today\, nearly every person has a video camera at all times in the form of a mobile phone. \nAfter high-profile police encounters in New York\, Baltimore and Ferguson\, Missouri\, citizen activists are filming encounters between police and suspects. First Amendment auditors claim the right to film public employees going about their business in public buildings. For example\, auditors now arrive at government buildings in groups to wander around\, filming and interfering with workers and residents. \nIt is clearly established that video recording of police encounters is a form of speech protected by the First Amendment. However\, the First Amendment is not absolute. The Supreme Court has recognized that there are certain places in which the government can limit speech. This 90-Minutes presentation covers those certain places where the government may limit access and recording. \nTopics Include:\n• Criteria for Imposing Restrictions;\n• Implementing a Policy Regarding Filming; and\n• Practical Response to Handling Encounters. \nPOST Credit:\n1-Hour Legal Studies\n1-Hour Technical Studies \nCost: FREE \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \n\nView System Requirements \n\n  \nREGISTER FOR WEBINAR\n

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: De-Escalation Policy & Practice: What Every Supervisor and Trainer Needs to Know
DESCRIPTION:Despite the rise in popularity of de-escalation tactics and policies\, there is very little research on de-escalation training in policing. In addition\, there is no agreed-upon definition of de-escalation\, and the exact approach and the tactics associated with it can vary dramatically. SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Cops Policing Their Own: But No One Likes a Tattletale
DESCRIPTION:POST #21216 \nWhen it comes to officers policing their own\, the old adage is\, “An officer can recall in vivid detail exactly what a suspect did a year ago\, but can’t remember what a fellow officer did yesterday.” This “Code of Silence\,” as it is described is the practice of closing ranks behind each other\, clamming up\, and protecting their own. This makes the holding of bad cops responsible for their actions practically impossible. But no one likes a “tattletale”\, right? In fact\, we often teach our children from an early age not to tattle. But as one member of a minority community put it\, “If they won’t snitch on each other they have no business asking us to do the same.” \nThis session examines reasons community members are reluctant to share information about crimes and contrasts those reasons with why cops are reluctant to share information about bad cops. \nTopics Include: \nDo cops really not like “tattling” and tattletales?\nWhy we punish “tattletales” and the impact on people coming forward.\nThe rationale for not report wrongdoing.\nBreaking the Code of Silence. \nPOST Credit: 1.5 Hours Technical Studies \nCOST: FREE \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \nView System Requirements \n  \nREGISTER FOR WEBINAR

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Bias & Predictive Processing... Human Nature or Police Oppression?
DESCRIPTION:POST #21916 \n  \nBias is a natural part of the human condition — of how the brain works. And it affects how we make decisions\, engage with others\, and respond to various situations and circumstances. “Predictive processing” makes sense of the world by predicting what we will see and then updating these predictions as the situation demands. This prediction is based on the prior probabilities that have developed through our experience. Biases\, predictive processing\, and heuristics — a mental shortcut that allows us to solve problems and make judgments quickly and efficiently — are how our brains compensate for overload\, which can inhibit performance and lead to poor decision-making. This 90-minute presentation examines the nature of bias and how public safety personnel utilize heuristics and predictive processing to remain safe while providing professional services to the community. \nTOPICS INCLUDE:\n• Bias as Natural Part of the Human Condition\n• Heuristics and Cognitive Biases\n• The “Predictive Brain”\n• Implicit Bias & Stereotypes\n• How Patterns Shape Our Perception \nPOST CLEE CREDIT: 1.5 Hours Technical Studies-Implicit Bias \nCOST: FREE \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \nView System Requirements \n  \nREGISTER FOR WEBINAR
