POST #24767
Recent information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates over 5.4 million adults in the United States have autism spectrum disorder, or ASD.
Autistic individuals are likely to encounter law enforcement officers at some point in their lives, whether it is in the community, during a routine traffic stop, at a concert or large community event, or as the result of a suspicious person or aggressive behavior call to 911.
Recognizing the behavior symptoms and knowing contact approaches are important aspects of minimizing the risk to the person with autism, as well as to officers. This 90-Minute presentation provides information for law enforcement and corrections staff to effectively interact with individuals on the spectrum.
Topics Include:
- Common Symptoms of Autism;
- Tips for Interacting With a Person With Autism;
- The Importance of Autism Training for Law Enforcement; and
- Overseeing Autistic Inmates.
