There is more to delivering meaningful instruction than just getting up and talking in front of a group. Teaching techniques or procedures that fall below the standard of a specific industry or negligently drafting an employee training manual or employee training guide that fails to properly train employees for the tasks in which they will be working can lead to unwanted liability. Not only must training material be well thought out, researched, and designed, it must also be properly delivered in the classroom or through an e-learning platform.
Despite the rise in popularity of de-escalation tactics and policies, there is very little research on de-escalation training in policing. In addition, there is no agreed-upon definition of de-escalation, and the exact approach and the tactics associated with it can vary dramatically.

In short, cell extractions are a risk management nightmare.
This scenario and video based classroom presentation covers common statutes and rules affecting operations and staff. It also covers case law relating to the duty to attend to the serious medical needs of inmates and the legal duty to intervene to prevent inmates from self-harm, as well as harm at the hands of another, including jail staff.
TERMINAL LEARNING OBJECTIVE: To bring awareness to the dangers of prone restraint and to provide participants with the knowledge and skill to help avoid in-custody deaths from asphyxiation.
