Bias is a natural part of the human condition — of how the brain works. And it affects how we make decisions, engage with others, and respond to various situations and circumstances. “Predictive processing” makes sense of the world by predicting what we will see and then updating these predictions as the situation demands. This prediction is based on the prior probabilities that have developed through our experience. Biases, predictive processing, and heuristics — a mental shortcut that allows us to solve problems and make judgments quickly and efficiently — are how our brains compensate for overload, which can inhibit performance and lead to poor decision-making. This 90-minute presentation examines the nature of bias and how public safety personnel utilize heuristics and predictive processing to remain safe while providing professional services to the community.
